VGC Special Attacker Guide

Flutter Mane
VGC Guide

Flutter Mane is a Gen 9 Paradox Pokémon with 135 base Sp.Atk and 135 base Speed, making it one of the most dangerous special attackers in VGC. Its Fairy/Ghost dual typing provides exceptional offensive coverage and immunity advantages.

Why Fairy/Ghost Typing is Elite

Fairy typing provides 2× damage against Dragon-type Pokémon — critical value when Dragon restricted legends (Koraidon, Miraidon) dominate the format. Fairy also resists Fighting and Dark, and deals 2× to both, giving wide offensive coverage.

Ghost typing provides two immunities: Normal and Fighting moves are completely ineffective. This means opposing Incineroar cannot Fake Out Flutter Mane — it simply doesn’t work. Ghost-type Shadow Ball also cleanly handles Psychic-type targets.

Key Advantage

Fake Out Immunity

Ghost-type immune to Normal — Incineroar Fake Out simply fails against Flutter Mane

Offensive Edge

Dragon Slayer

Fairy 2× vs Dragon; most restricted legend spread moves are resisted or neutral

Key Weakness

Steel Weakness

Steel moves hit for 2× (Fairy weakness). Flash Cannon from Incineroar or Gholdengo is threatening

Protosynthesis: Ability Breakdown

Ability Mechanics

In Harsh Sunlight (or holding a Booster Energy), Protosynthesis boosts Flutter Mane’s highest base stat. Since Sp.Atk and Speed are both 135, either can trigger — most sets prefer the Sp.Atk boost (the payoff is larger than more Speed).

With Protosynthesis boosting Sp.Atk in Sun, Flutter Mane effectively reaches a ×1.3 multiplier on special attacks. Moonblast and Shadow Ball become extraordinarily difficult to tank. Koraidon teams naturally provide the Sun environment Flutter Mane wants.

EV Spread Breakdown

Full Speed (Standard)
Recommended
252 SpAtk / 4 Def / 252 Spe · Timid

Guarantees outspeeding non-speed-invested foes at the same base; maximizes every offensive opportunity.

Offensive Bias
Situational
252 SpAtk / 252 HP / 4 Spe · Modest

Booster Energy triggers on Sp.Atk with Modest. More output per hit, HP investment survives priority.

Speed Tuned
Advanced
252 SpAtk / 68 HP / 188 Spe · Timid

Hits a specific speed benchmark then dumps remaining EVs into bulk — keeps outspeeding most threats.
