VGC Core Mechanics Guide

VGC
Speed Tiers

Speed order determines who acts first — often the difference between winning and losing. Understanding key speed benchmarks, Tailwind doubling, and Trick Room reversals is essential for high-level VGC play.

Speed Stat Formula

Formula (Level 50)
EV分量 = ⌊EV / 4⌋
內部值 = ⌊(2 × 基礎速度 + IV + EV分量) × 50 / 100⌋
最終速度 = ⌊(內部值 + 5) × 性格修正⌋
Nature modifier
Neutral ×1.0 / +Speed ×1.1 / -Speed ×0.9
IV assumption
Competitive Pokémon use 31 IVs by default
Tailwind effect
Speed ×2 for 4 turns
Worked Example: Dragapult 252 EV +Speed Nature
Base Spe = 142, EVs = 252, IVs = 31, Nature = 1.1 (Timid)
EV comp = ⌊252 / 4⌋ = 63
Inner = ⌊(2 × 142 + 31 + 63) × 50 / 100⌋ = ⌊378 × 0.5⌋ = 189
Final Spe = ⌊(189 + 5) × 1.1⌋ = ⌊213.4⌋ = 213

Tailwind Mechanics

Tailwind doubles the Speed of all your Pokémon for 4 turns (including the turn it’s set). It’s the most common speed control strategy in VGC and is central to many top team archetypes.

Key distinction: Tailwind doesn’t change base Speed or BST — it only doubles the final speed value when determining turn order. Trick Room’s reversal still applies under Tailwind, making Tailwind + Trick Room matchups one of VGC’s most complex speed puzzles.

Speed Under Tailwind

Final Speed × 2. Example: Incineroar at 0 Spe EVs neutral goes 75 → 150 under Tailwind, outspeeding max neutral Urshifu (120).

Tailwind Setters

Best setters are fast Pokémon that survive long enough to set up (Tornadus, Whimsicott, Flutter Mane). Speed of the setter must outpace opponent threats.

Trick Room: Speed Reversal

Trick Room reverses the entire turn order — the slowest Pokémon acts first. This transforms Speed disadvantage into strategic dominance and is the primary counter to Tailwind teams.

Under Trick Room, the Pokémon with the lowest Speed stat acts first. Iron Hands (50 base Speed) and Cresselia (85 base Speed) are Reg F Trick Room cornerstones. Setters are typically Psychic-types such as Porygon2 or Calyrex-Ice Rider.

Trick Room Key Speed Thresholds
63
Iron Hands

0-EV neutral. Premier Trick Room attacker; Electric Terrain Supercell Slash is threatening.

30
Calyrex-Ice

0-EV neutral. Almost guaranteed to act first under Trick Room with full HP.

40
Ursaluna

0-EV neutral. Standard Trick Room breaker with Earthquake.

106
Cresselia (setter)

Fast enough to set TR before most threats; provides Moon Blast + Lunar Blessing support.

Speed EV Investment Strategy

Maximum Investment (252 EVs)

Guarantees outspeeding a specific benchmark. Best for offensive sweepers (Flutter Mane, Dragapult) where acting first is mandatory.

Use when: When a specific speed benchmark is a match-critical threshold

Precise Tuning (xx EVs)

Invest just enough EVs to outspeed your target. Leftover EVs go to bulk. Maximizes survival while securing the speed check you need.

Use when: When you only need to outpace one or two specific threats (e.g., 24 EVs to outspeed 0-EV Volcarona)

Zero Speed (0 EVs)

Abandon speed entirely. All EVs go to HP/Defense/Special Defense. Best for Trick Room cores or pure support roles.

Use when: Trick Room teams, or support Pokémon (Incineroar, Cresselia) that don’t care about speed order
