How to Beat
Flutter Mane
VGC 2026
Flutter Mane is the highest-usage non-restricted special attacker in VGC. 135 Sp.Atk, 135 Speed, Ghost immunity to Fake Out. This guide covers type weaknesses, best counters, and effective in-game response pacing.
Flutter Mane Type Chart
Common mistake: Dark vs Flutter Mane = ×1 neutral (Ghost ×2 is cancelled by Fairy ×0.5 resistance — Dark is NOT a weakness). Poison = ×1 neutral. Bug = ×0.25 double resist.
Why Flutter Mane Is Hard to Stop
Protosynthesis boosts Flutter Mane's highest stat ×1.3 in Sun or Electric Terrain — typically Sp.Atk, with no item required. Reaches world-class special attack output instantly.
In Regulation I, 135 Speed outruns almost all non-restricted Pokémon, including most speed-control builds. Flutter Mane deals damage before most teams can respond.
Ghost typing makes Fake Out completely ineffective. Opponents cannot use the traditional Fake Out window to interrupt Flutter Mane's attack turns.
Effective Strategies vs Flutter Mane
Iron Hands' Bullet Punch (Priority +1) is the most reliable answer — Steel ×2 against Flutter Mane lets Bullet Punch KO before Flutter Mane acts. Iron Bundle's Bullet Punch can also revenge kill reliably within fast priority. Steel priority bypasses Flutter Mane's 135 Speed entirely.
Intimidate doesn't affect Flutter Mane's Sp.Atk directly, but Parting Shot dropping both Atk AND SpAtk -1 can reduce Flutter Mane's damage output. Keeping Incineroar healthy and pivoting lets your team absorb Flutter Mane hits more safely while chipping back.
Flutter Mane mainly outputs Fairy and Psychic special damage. High Sp.Def Steel-types (Assault Vest Iron Hands for physical bulk, Goodra-H for Sp.Def bulk) or Psychic walls (Cresselia) can take hits across multiple turns.
Trick Room completely neutralizes Flutter Mane's 135 Speed advantage — the fastest becomes the slowest under TR. This is the most structural answer: Trick Room + slow physical attackers pivot around Flutter Mane entirely.
Good as Gold blocks all status moves including Booster Energy activation via partner setups. Steel/Ghost typing also resists Fairy moves and is immune to Flutter Mane's spread options. Gholdengo is neutral to Flutter Mane's main STAB but counters its indirect support role.
Best Flutter Mane Counters
Bullet Punch +1 priority Steel STAB revenge kills; Steel resists Flutter Mane's Fairy STAB; Defiant punishes stat drops to +2 Atk
Low Sp.Def means Flutter Mane's coverage (Shadow Ball) threatens back; needs Fake Out cover or priority priority
Good as Gold blocks Flutter Mane's status support moves; Steel/Ghost resists Fairy; Make It Rain Steel spread hits for SE damage
Slow without Trick Room support; cannot act before Flutter Mane's 135 Speed
Parting Shot reduces Flutter Mane SpAtk -1; Fake Out provides utility; pivoting maintains damage reduction across multiple turns
Does not KO Flutter Mane directly; only reduces damage output — a support answer not a KO answer
Steel typing resists Flutter Mane's Fairy STAB; Defiant turns Intimidate/Parting Shot into +2 Atk; Sucker Punch priority threat forces Flutter Mane to play cautiously; Supreme Overlord adds stacking offense. Note: Dark moves are ×1 neutral vs Flutter Mane — Kingambit's value is anti-support, not type matchup
Slow; Flutter Mane acts first without Trick Room; Sucker Punch fails if Flutter Mane uses a status move
Beads of Ruin -25% SpDef debuff amplifies team damage; Fire STAB is neutral vs Flutter Mane (Fairy ×1, Ghost ×1). Note: Dark Pulse is also neutral ×1 — Chi-Yu does not have a type advantage and is primarily a team debuffer in this matchup
Fragile; Dark Aura boosts opponents' Dark moves too; Chi-Yu has no type advantage over Flutter Mane — both Fire and Dark are neutral ×1
Teambuilding vs Flutter Mane: 3 Musts
Include at least one priority answer — Iron Hands' Bullet Punch or Kingambit's Sucker Punch — so Flutter Mane has KO risk even at +1 Speed priority.
Include speed control (Trick Room or Tailwind). Trick Room fully neutralizes Flutter Mane's 135 Speed advantage and lets your slow physical attackers act first.
Steel-type coverage on at least one Pokémon. Steel is ×2 — even non-priority Steel moves threaten Flutter Mane and create switch pressure.
