Porygon2
VGC Guide
Porygon2 holding Eviolite gains ×1.5 to both Defense and SpDef — a bulk advantage no fully-evolved Pokémon can replicate. Download raises its Attack or SpAtk based on the opponent’s lower defensive stat, and as a Trick Room setter it enables slow physical sweepers to dominate. Porygon2 is the most durable TR setter in VGC.
Eviolite: Unreplicable Bulk Advantage
Eviolite raises the holder’s Defense and Special Defense by 50% (×1.5) if it is not fully evolved. Porygon2's base defenses (Def 90 / SpDef 95) are already solid — with Eviolite, the effective values reach 135 Def / 142 SpDef, surpassing most fully-evolved legendary Pokémon’s raw bulk.
Download Ability: Auto-Select Best Boost
Download compares the total Defense vs total SpDef of opposing Pokémon when Porygon2 enters. If Defense ≤ SpDef (total of both opponents), Porygon2's Attack rises +1; if Defense > SpDef, SpAtk rises +1. In most matchups, Download triggers a SpAtk boost (since most Pokémon have higher SpDef than Def), significantly increasing Porygon2's special damage output.
EV Spreads
Team Partners
After Porygon2 sets TR, Iron Hands’ 152 Attack gains speed priority and Rock Slide hits both opponents for massive spread damage. Iron Hands’ 58 Spe easily outruns 135 Spe threats under TR.
Ursaluna’s 140 Attack devastates under Trick Room. The Ursaluna + Porygon2 pairing is a well-known TR combination, leveraging ground-field adjustments and complementary utility.
Incineroar’s Fake Out protects Porygon2 during its Trick Room setup turn. Parting Shot reducing opposing Attack also lessens the pressure on Porygon2’s setup window.
Cresselia is another premier TR setter; pairing with Porygon2 creates a dual-setter strategy ensuring at least one successfully establishes Trick Room each game.
How to Counter Porygon2
Tornadus’ priority Taunt (Prankster) can block Porygon2’s status moves before it acts, preventing Trick Room setup and stripping support options like Recover.
Porygon2 is Normal-type; Fighting deals 2× damage. Moves from physically offensive Pokémon can cut through Eviolite bulk and eliminate Porygon2 before TR is established.
Taunt prevents re-setting TR, and focusing on surviving the 5-turn TR window then attacking freely afterward counters TR entirely. Stall tactics work well against TR teams.
Knock Off removes held items — removing Eviolite drastically reduces Porygon2’s bulk. Incineroar’s Knock Off is a standard tool that strips Porygon2 of its core advantage.
