VGC Tera Type
Strategy Guide
Terastallization is the most decisive battle mechanic in Generation 9. Choosing the correct Tera type maximizes your core Pokémon’s effectiveness; a wrong choice can collapse your entire strategy. Tera type selection falls into three major directions: offensive amplification, defensive removal, and surprise coverage.
Three Core Tera Strategy Directions
Choose a Tera type matching your primary offensive move to stack STAB bonuses (×1.5 × ×1.5 = ×2.25 effective). Whimsicott Tera Fairy boosts Moonblast; Koraidon Tera Fire amplifies Flare Blitz. Maximum damage output, but defensive typing may stay weak or worsen.
Choose a Tera type that removes critical weaknesses. Iron Hands Tera Fire removes Ice and Grass weaknesses; Calyrex-Shadow Tera Fairy grants Dark immunity; Garchomp Tera Flying removes Fighting and Ground super-effectiveness. Maximum survivability, but offensive STAB may be lost.
Choose a Tera type the opponent cannot predict, granting STAB to otherwise non-STAB moves in your moveset. Flutter Mane Tera Normal makes Boomburst hit ×1.5; Miraidon Tera Fighting gives Close Combat a STAB boost. Most deceptive direction — opponents cannot pre-plan correct responses.
Top 10 High-Usage VGC Tera Combinations
Removes Ice and Grass double-weaknesses, dramatically improving survival against sun teams and Grassy Terrain. Tera Fire also grants immunity to Flash Fire from fire moves after Terastallizing.
Removes Dark-type weakness (Psychic/Ghost is ×2 weak to Dark). Fairy type also grants Dragon immunity. The most common defensive Tera choice among restricted legendaries in VGC.
Tera Normal gives Boomburst (100 BP) STAB for 150 effective BP. Normal-type has very few immunities (only Ghost), so Boomburst hits nearly every target for massive spread damage.
Koraidon’s original typing is weak to Ice. Tera Flying removes the Ice super-effectiveness and adds Flying STAB to Hurricane. Common in teams facing Ice-type legendary threats.
Miraidon already has Electric STAB — Tera Electric stacks to ×2.25 effective multiplier on Electro Drift. Combined with 135 base SpAtk, the resulting damage output is devastating.
Tera Ghost makes Flutter Mane immune to Normal and Fighting moves. Opponents cannot predict whether to switch in a Dark-type or not, creating constant defensive uncertainty.
Tera Ghost stacks with Rage Fist’s existing Ghost STAB for ×2.25 effective multiplier. Max Rage Fist (350 BP) with ×1.5 × ×1.5 creates literally the highest single-hit damage potential in the game.
Fire/Dark Incineroar is weak to Ground, Water, and Rock. Tera Water removes Ground weakness and gives Tera Blast Water STAB — a defensive pivot that can retaliate against Ground-type threats.
Steel immunity to Poison prevents status from Poison Powder. Steel also resists Fairy moves, making Whimsicott harder to eliminate. Tera Steel keeps Prankster utility while dramatically improving bulk.
Garchomp’s Dragon/Ground typing has ×4 Ice weakness. Tera Flying removes all original weaknesses and gives Hurricane STAB. The most played Tera choice for Garchomp in modern VGC.
4-Step Tera Type Decision Framework
Start with the type of your most relied-upon offensive move. If that move is your win condition, offensive Tera stacking STAB onto it usually maximizes damage output most efficiently.
List the most common attack types in the current meta. If one weakness is repeatedly exploited against your team, defensive Tera removing it fundamentally improves your matchup spread.
With strong support (Fake Out, screens, speed control), offensive Tera’s damage maximization returns are highest. Without durable support structures, defensive Tera is the safer, more reliable choice.
Surprise Tera’s value lies in forcing incorrect responses at critical moments. If your team is being read at high-level play, an unpredictable Tera type can create a decisive strategic edge.
