Zamazenta
VGC Guide
Zamazenta is among the top defensive restricted legendaries in Regulation I. Crowned Shield form boasts an imposing 180 Defense and 148 base Speed. Dauntless Shield grants an entry boost while Behemoth Bash dispatches physical threats rapidly in doubles.
Hero vs Crowned: Form Comparison
Can hold any item (Life Orb, Choice Band). Type: Fighting. No mega-style ability.
Type: Fighting/Steel. Item slot locked to Rusted Shield, but massive stat boost across the board.
Dauntless Shield: Ability Breakdown
+1 Defense on entry (once per battle)
Triggers only on the first entry each battle — not again on re-entry after switching. In doubles, this immediate +1 Defense on turn 1 reduces incoming physical damage before the opponent can act.
Comparison to Zacian’s Intrepid Sword
Where Zacian’s +1 Attack creates offensive momentum, Zamazenta’s +1 Defense creates defensive momentum. In doubles, a bulky legendary that doesn’t die in one turn creates sustained field presence and forces the opponent to dedicate more resources to remove it.
Best Movesets
High SpDef investment compensates for Zamazenta’s average 100 base SpDef, allowing it to take hits from special restricted legends (Kyogre, Calyrex-Shadow) and remain in field. Used as a TR pivot to maintain field presence.
Team Building & Best Pair Partners
Calyrex-Shadow + Zamazenta covers both physical and special defense walls. Zamazenta’s Crunch answers Calyrex-Shadow’s Dark-type counters, and the pair shares zero weaknesses.
Zamazenta is weather-neutral, providing a consistent threat when opponents respond to weather. Kyogre’s Water coverage addresses Zamazenta’s Fire and Ground weaknesses.
Intimidate + Fake Out + Parting Shot supports Zamazenta’s entry. Parting Shot cycling lets Zamazenta re-enter safely to retrigger Dauntless Shield on switch.
Under Trick Room, Zamazenta’s 148 Speed becomes a liability, but paired with Cresselia’s TR setting, you can build a slow-control archetype that flips the speed advantage.
