Grimmsnarl
VGC Guide
Grimmsnarl’s Prankster gives Reflect and Light Screen +1 priority, allowing screens to be set before any opponent can act. Combined with Spirit Break dropping opposing SpAtk and its excellent Fairy/Dark defensive typing, Grimmsnarl is one of the most reliable support Pokémon in VGC.
Prankster: Priority Screen Setup
Prankster gives all status (non-damaging) moves +1 priority. Reflect and Light Screen are status moves, so under Prankster they always act before any standard-priority attack. Critical note: Prankster moves completely fail against Dark-type Pokémon (mechanic introduced in Gen 7).
- • Reflect (halves physical damage, 5 turns)
- • Light Screen (halves special damage, 5 turns)
- • Taunt (blocks opponent’s status moves)
- • Thunder Wave (paralysis support)
- • Completely fails vs Dark-type targets
- • Does not affect damaging moves
- • Spirit Break is a damaging move — no Prankster boost
- • Grimmsnarl itself loses status moves under Taunt
Spirit Break: SpAtk Reduction
Spirit Break is a Fairy-type physical move that lowers the target’s SpAtk by 1 stage on hit. Combined with Light Screen’s special damage halving, this significantly weakens special attackers like Calyrex-Shadow, Gholdengo, and Miraidon. In doubles, Spirit Break provides Grimmsnarl a relevant offensive presence while still supporting the team.

Team Partners
Light Screen + Calyrex-Shadow lets Astral Barrage fire safely under special halving. Screens dramatically improve Calyrex’s survivability, enabling the Grim Neigh chain KO more easily.
Grimmsnarl Spirit Break drops opposing SpAtk, then Gholdengo’s Make It Rain cleans up. Gholdengo’s Good as Gold makes it immune to Taunt, protecting Grimmsnarl’s screen plan.
Miraidon’s Hadron Engine sets Electric Terrain; Grimmsnarl’s screens create an extremely durable dual-support core. Electric Seed on Grimmsnarl activates under ET for extra SpDef boost.
Fake Out + Grimmsnarl screens is one of VGC’s most consistent lead combinations. Both together protect the offensive core’s safe entry while completing screen setup — near S-tier lead duo.
How to Counter Grimmsnarl
Dark-type Pokémon are completely immune to Prankster-boosted moves. Leading with a Dark-type forces Grimmsnarl into a position where it cannot set screens at all.
Incineroar Fake Out + Tornadus Prankster Taunt can block Grimmsnarl’s status moves before it acts. Direct Taunt from faster Pokémon also shuts down the screen plan.
Despite decent bulk, Grimmsnarl has weak offensive presence. Concentrated super-effective attacks (Steel ×2, Poison ×2 vs Fairy type) can eliminate it before screens are fully established.
Defog clears all screen effects immediately. Some team structures bring a screen-breaker Pokémon to switch in after screens are set, resetting the investment advantage.
