Groudon
VGC Guide
Groudon is the most physically durable sun setter in Regulation F. With 150 base Attack and 140 Defense, it operates as both an offensive threat and a physical wall. Precipice Blades 120 BP hits both opponents in doubles; Drought enables Sun-boosted teammates alongside it.
Drought: Ability Breakdown
Sets Harsh Sunlight on entry (5 turns)
No Sun move required. Under Sun: Fire moves ×1.5, Water moves ×0.5, Chlorophyll / Solar Power / Protosynthesis abilities activate. Unlike Koraidon, Drought is a standard ability — 5-turn timer applies.
Precipice Blades: 120 BP Ground Spread
Precipice Blades hits both opponents in doubles at 95% accuracy. With 150 base Attack, this is one of the most powerful spread moves in Regulation F — only the accuracy prevents it from being universally dominant.
Sun enables Fire-type teammates
Groudon’s own Fire Punch becomes devastating in Sun; Drought simultaneously powers Flutter Mane’s Fire coverage and any Solar-Power or Protosynthesis allies.
Groudon vs Koraidon: Which to Use?
- +140 Defense: survives physical hits and attacks back
- +Precipice Blades 120 BP spread (Koraidon has no spread)
- +Fire Punch hits Grass-types under Sun
- +Red Orb upgrade path for Ancient Groudon
- +135 Speed: dramatically faster than Groudon’s 90
- +Orichalcum Pulse ×4/3 Attack boost stronger than Drought
- +Fighting-type STAB gives broader coverage
- +Higher usage — more team support research available
Choose Groudon when you need a physical wall + spread damage; choose Koraidon when you need speed control + maximum single-target output.
EV Spread Recommendations
Adamant
252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Life Orb
Adamant 252 Atk maximizes Precipice Blades spread damage; 252 Speed ties Kyogre for the base-90 speed tier
Adamant
252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Def
Assault Vest
Maximum physical bulk — Assault Vest massively boosts SpDef, letting Groudon take a hit and continue attacking
Jolly
252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Life Orb
Jolly ensures speed tie wins against other base-90s; useful when mirroring Kyogre teams
Team Building Partners
Solar Power under Drought boosts Flutter Mane’s Special Attack to an effective ~303 — combined with Focus Sash, this OHKOs most opponents. Groudon sets Sun, Flutter Mane executes.
Intimidate protects Groudon allowing it to stay in and continue using Precipice Blades. Fake Out creates a free Drought activation turn.
Rage Powder redirects attacks away from Groudon; Spore under Sun with Safety Goggles Incineroar supporting creates a disruption-heavy defensive shell around Groudon’s spread damage.
Groudon’s 90 base Speed is slow for the current format. Tailwind doubles it to 312 for 4 turns — outspeeding the entire unboosted field and enabling Groudon to move first.
How to Counter Groudon
Water Spread Moves (Kyogre Origin Pulse)
Groudon has a ×2 Water weakness. Kyogre Origin Pulse in Rain is almost guaranteed OHKO. The weather war is Groudon’s primary structural weakness — Kyogre teams are natural counters.
Grass-type Coverage
Rillaboom Wood Hammer and Grass Knot exploit Groudon’s ×2 Grass weakness. Grass-type coverage is commonly used in doubles specifically to counter Ground spread damage.
Weather Override
Kyogre or Politoed’s Drizzle overwrites Drought — switching weather removes Groudon’s Sun boost and enables Water moves to threaten it simultaneously.
Levitate and Ground Immunity
Levitate Pokémon and Electric Terrain immunity completely negate Precipice Blades. Positioning Ground-immune partners is the primary way to neutralize Groudon spread damage.
