Whimsicott
VGC Guide
Whimsicott’s Prankster ability gives all status moves +1 priority, making Tailwind, Encore, and Taunt function as near-guaranteed priority moves. With 116 base Speed and instant Prankster Tailwind setup, it is one of the most reliable speed control supports in VGC. Critical warning: Prankster has no effect against Dark-type Pokémon.
Prankster: Priority Status Move System
Prankster grants +1 priority to all status moves, making Tailwind (speed ×2 for 4 turns), Encore (locks opponent into a move), and Taunt (blocks status moves) all act before virtually any opponent’s move. Since Generation 7, Prankster completely fails against Dark-type Pokémon — the move simply does not work.
Beat Up + Justified Activation Combo
Whimsicott can use Beat Up on its own ally, triggering the ally’s Justified ability (+1 Attack per hit). With six Pokémon on your team, Beat Up can land up to 6 hits, boosting the ally’s Attack by up to +6 stages. The most common target is Cobalion or Arcanine with Justified — a single Beat Up can create an overwhelming offensive threat.

Team Partners
Running two Whimsicott ensures Tailwind can be re-set even after the first goes down. Prankster Tailwind from the second covers any gap, maintaining continuous speed pressure throughout the match.
Tornadus also has Prankster, combining Prankster Taunt with Whimsicott’s Prankster Tailwind. Tornadus handles Taunt locking while Whimsicott sets Tailwind — a dual Prankster package.
Tailwind doubles Koraidon’s already-high speed, making it nearly impossible to outspeed. Whimsicott’s Encore can lock Kyogre into Drizzle or Water Spout, creating safe windows for Koraidon.
Beat Up triggers Justified up to 6 times, raising the ally’s Attack by up to +6 stages. Cobalion or Arcanine with Justified are the typical targets — a single Beat Up creates overwhelming physical threats.
How to Counter Whimsicott
Any Dark-type Pokémon is completely immune to Prankster. Whimsicott’s Tailwind, Encore, and Taunt all fail against Dark-types. Incineroar, Grimmsnarl, and Weavile can freely act without fear of Prankster disruption.
A priority Taunt from a faster Prankster user can shut down Whimsicott. At the same priority, Speed determines who wins — Tornadus with 111 base Speed loses to Whimsicott’s 116 under normal conditions.
Whimsicott’s primary offensive move is Moonblast (Fairy), which Steel-types are immune to. Running a Steel-type partner effectively neutralizes its damage output, forcing reliance on support moves only.
Whimsicott’s HP and SpDef are low, making Fire super-effective moves a reliable OHKO threat. Fire Blast or Heat Wave under Sun from Chi-Yu or Koraidon eliminates Whimsicott before it can set Tailwind.
