Iron Crown VGC Guide
Quark Drive SpA Core | Tachyon Cutter Double-Hit Attacker
Iron Crown’s Role in VGC
Iron Crown is the future paradox form of Cobalion. Steel/Psychic typing grants excellent resistances — only weak to Fire, Ground, and Ghost. Its signature Tachyon Cutter is a never-miss special Steel move that hits twice (50 BP × 2), effectively 100 BP with perfect accuracy.
Quark Drive boosts its highest stat by 30% under Electric Terrain — typically SpA — making Iron Crown a powerful offensive threat in Electric Terrain teams. 94 Speed is solid mid-tier in Doubles, outspeeding many common threats.
Base Stats
BST 586 — 122 SpA and 108 SpD are the highlights; 100 Def gives solid physical bulk too
👑 Ability: Quark Drive
Activation Condition
Activates under Electric Terrain or when holding Booster Energy. Boosts the stat with the highest base value by 30%.
Iron Crown’s Highest Base Stat
Iron Crown’s highest base stat is SpA (122), so Quark Drive typically boosts SpA. Adjusting nature/EVs to make SpD the highest stat gives a bulky defensive variant instead.
Booster Energy vs Electric Terrain
Booster Energy activates immediately on entry and is consumed, regardless of terrain — great for non-Electric teams. Electric Terrain version requires Miraidon or Raging Bolt to maintain the terrain but reactivates each time Iron Crown switches back in.

💡 Multi-Hit Moves in Doubles
Multi-hit moves have a hidden advantage in Doubles: the first hit can trigger items like Sitrus Berry, while the second hit deals damage without that item active. Multi-hit moves also break through Substitute while still dealing damage with the remaining hits.
Build 1: Electric Terrain Special Attacker
Psychic Terrain Expanding Force variant for spread damage
Moves
- ▸ Tachyon Cutter
- ▸ Expanding Force
- ▸ Iron Defense
- ▸ Protect
EV Spread
Build Notes
Booster Energy lets Quark Drive trigger without Electric Terrain dependency. Iron Defense + HP 252 allows a pivot to defensive play, forcing opponents to use Ghost moves — which Iron Crown has no resistance to, so watch out.
Build 2: Speed-Oriented Coverage Attacker
Speed investment for more first-strike opportunities, pure offense without Iron Defense
Moves
- ▸ Tachyon Cutter
- ▸ Psychic
- ▸ Flash Cannon
- ▸ Protect
EV Spread
Build Notes
Max 94 Speed outspeeds many common threats. Flash Cannon provides extra Steel coverage, Psychic hits Fighting/Poison types. Use this build when your team needs a fast offensive backbone.
Recommended Partners
Miraidon (Electric Terrain Quark Drive Trigger)
Miraidon’s Hadron Engine sustains Electric Terrain indefinitely, letting Iron Crown enjoy Quark Drive without using Booster Energy. Both share a Ground weakness — ensure your team covers that.
Indeedee-F (Psychic Terrain + Expanding Force Boost)
Indeedee-F’s Psychic Surge sets Psychic Terrain, powering up Iron Crown’s Expanding Force to ×1.5 and hitting both targets. An extremely potent spread combination. Note: Psychic Terrain and Electric Terrain cannot coexist — plan your Terrain accordingly.
Calyrex-Shadow (Restricted Legend + Weakness Coverage)
Calyrex-Shadow is immune to Fighting and Normal, covering gaps Iron Crown leaves. Both carry Psychic offense for a dual Psychic core that pressures from multiple angles. Iron Crown’s Steel typing also covers matchups that trouble Calyrex-Shadow.
Countering Iron Crown
Exploitable Weaknesses
- • Fire ×2 — Incineroar, Torkoal, Koraidon sun offense
- • Ground ×2 — Landorus-T, Garchomp
- • Ghost ×2 — Calyrex-Shadow, Gengar
Tactical Counters
- • Override terrain (Grassy/Psychic) to shut off Quark Drive
- • Protect to scout Tachyon Cutter timing
- • Use Ghost-types to avoid Expanding Force
- • Switch in Ground-type to threaten OHKO with Ground moves
